The published report, Health, United States 2004, states that 44 percent of Americans take at least one prescription drug, and over 16 percent take at least three prescription drugs daily. That’s an increase of 13 and 38 percent respectively compared to statistics from between 1988 and 1994. It’s possible that these figures could go even higher when you consider the new epidemics of obesity and diabetes. Type II diabetes— previously termed “adult-onset diabetes”—is now appearing with alarming frequency among children and teenagers. The repercussions on health of these two maladies alone are tremendous. Something has to change.
